Retinol vs. Vitamin C: Which One Does Your Skin Need?

What each one actually does

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. It brightens uneven tone, fades dark marks and defends skin against daytime environmental damage. Retinol is a cell-turnover accelerator: it softens fine lines, refines texture and helps clear congestion over time.

Morning or night?

Vitamin C belongs in the morning, layered under sunscreen, where its antioxidant protection is most useful. Retinol belongs at night, when it will not be degraded by light and your skin is in repair mode.

Can you use both?

Yes — just not in the same application. Split them across morning and evening and build up frequency gradually.

Who should be cautious

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a reactive skin barrier, speak to a pharmacist or GP before starting retinol.
